Jurek, an already widowed professor of Asian studies in Warsaw, Poland, seeks solace following the death of his daughter, Marysia. Marysia’s Chinese grandfather and Jurek’s father-in-law, Ben, arrives from Scotland and suggests that they forego a Christian burial and convinces him to perform “minghun”, a Chinese post-mortem marriage ritual for the death of an unmarried person.
