Foregone is a novel that revolves around Leonard Fife, a famous leftist documentary filmmaker who fled to Canada to avoid serving in the Vietnam War. He is now in his late 70s and is dying of cancer in Montreal. He agrees to a final interview with his ex-student and acolyte, Malcolm MacLeod, where he intends to reveal all his secrets and demythologize his life. The interview is filmed in the presence of Fife’s wife and Malcolm’s team, who have always admired Fife but are now forced to confront the shocking revelations of his confession.
