During World War II in 1941, Mitsue Sakamoto and Ralph MacLean, both Canadians from different cultural backgrounds, suffer through violence, starvation, and racial injustice. Mitsue is a prisoner of war, while Ralph is a slave laborer on an Alberta sugar-beet farm. After the war, they struggle to rebuild their lives, and when their children fall in love, they must confront their past and prejudices. This true story explores the dark side of humanity, but also shows the power of love and forgiveness.
