Set in the mid-1990s, the film follows 12-year-old Jane as she rebels against her role as proxy-carer for her mother Sylvia, a fading Broadway diva recently divorced. During a long weekend at their grand country house, Sylvia hosts three male dancers from her tour and anticipates the arrival of her younger boyfriend, Dale. As Jane strives to shield her mother from disruptions, she quietly transitions from childhood to a wiser, freer, and more solitary state.
